Guys – thinking about a vasectomy?

By Dann Alexander

Childfree guys who are considering this procedure have much to consider before taking the steps closer to sterility. In most places, you would need a referral to a Urologist who could perform the procedure. That referral must come from your family physician. For those who do not have a family doctor, a doctor at a walk-in clinic may provide one, but I understand those circumstances are quite rare.

Most doctors when approached for this procedure may ask if you have children. The overwhelming majority of physicians prefer to send referrals only from fathers who are “done” having children. What then of those who do not want to start a family in the first place?

In my instance, my family doctor at the time first wanted me to go and see a psychiatrist. The sight of him sitting back in a chair, wiping his brow in bewilderment, still brings a smile to my face and a chuckle to my voice. If this is a decision you are serious about, I would suggest to any guys that you need to convey your convictions as best as you can. The choice not to have children is becoming more and more respected by society in general and the medical community.

It is very important to note that depending on where you are, you might be able to request a procedure where chances of a successful reversal (should you later want it) might be greater. There is always the possibility that as strong as your conviction might be, it could change over time.

The decision of a vasectomy is something not to be taken lightly. If you are firm in your choice, you have the right to request a referral for this procedure. That right is of course very much dependent on the healthcare system in your country and resources available.

Educate yourself on all aspects of the operation. Learn from the experiences of others. The internet has a vast array of stories from those who have experienced the procedure. Even any negative experiences may be something you can learn from. I was successfully able to have the procedure done before my twenty-fifth birthday. Perhaps in a future post, I will share my own personal experience.

Please Note: This post is not intended to be interpreted as medical advice. It is based on a personal experience. Any and all medical questions related to this procedure should be directed to a qualified physician in your area. Here is a link for those who wish to know more about the procedure.
