Aubrea’s Story: I wish more people understood how lovely life can be without children

Aubrea AsheI was never into children, even when I was a child myself. My sister was the total opposite and always wanted to babysit younger children or hold anyone’s new baby, which probably helped clarify how uninterested and un-enamored I was myself with children. I’ve always been hyper focused on self-improvement and always kept a long to-do list filled with personal and professional goals.

Volunteering is something that brings me a lot of joy and satisfaction. I do like to give back to the world, and it’s important for me to help lead my family members and my friends to successful lives as well as myself, however, I drain easily. I do not function well when I’m tired. I’m not good at giving to others when my own cup is running low on juice. In order to be my best me for myself and for my family, friends, and community, I really have to practice self-care and put myself first. I love being free and having the ability to do whatever I want, whenever I want to. Life really feels so beautiful to me this way.

I am married now and have a very nice career as an accountant. My husband and I travel frequently. We have very fulfilling, healthy relationships with our family and stay in touch with friends. We have time to enjoy each other, and time to pursue our personal and professional goals. For me, being childfree was always the only option.

I wish that more people understood how lovely life can be without children. Free of that emotional and financial pressure and stress. It still feels like people are growing up in a world where it’s just assumed that we should create our own biological family. I would like to see that change in the next few decades.

I would like young people to take the time to analyze their personality. Their capacity for raising children. Their personal and professional desires and really think deeper about what will make them happy long-term before they have children simply because that’s always been what adults do. It takes a village to raise a child and I would love to be a village member helping the rest of the world flourish. I think society needs more people like this.

This year I was able to publish my first book, which was a long term passion project of mine and a huge accomplishment! My book, “83 Reasons I Don’t Want A Baby: Deal With It” is available on Amazon Prime and Kindle. I think it’s important that all people explore the option of being childfree in a world that is overpopulated, and this can truly begin once we (the childfree community) start having conversations about being childfree with people who perhaps haven’t considered it. If we all had more capacity to give back instead of simply trying to survive, the world would be a much better place for everyone.

  1. Hi Aubrea,
Thanks for sharing your story. I wish you all the best with the book. I like that you have it available on kindle as well. That’s the way I purchase books these days and from what I understand, many other people too.
