Why Singer Anastacia is philosophical about not having children

By Nina Steele

AnastaciaThere is no doubt that Anastacia is a talented singer. That very distinctive and powerful voice means her music easily stands out, which is a feat in itself, considering how crowded the music scene is today. Reading her life story, one cannot fail to admire her resilience and strength of character. Her ability to deal with so many health issues and still go on to have a successful career, shows a woman determined to beat the odds every time. With an attitude like that, no wonder she is completely at ease with not having children, even though it wasn’t by choice.

Anastacia’s ability to recover from setbacks started at an early age. She “was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease aged 13”. The subsequent operation she underwent, “caused her to be wheelchair bound and needing to learn how to walk again”. Then there was her well-publicised battle with breast cancer, which resulted in a double mastectomy in 2013. Instead of making her slow down or even retire from the music scene, she went on to release her 6th album soon after, in 2014, which was both a critical and commercial success.

With a history of showing so much resilience and determination to carry on no matter what, it’s no surprise that she is completely philosophical about the fact that she is childless not by choice. On the subject of motherhood she said: “I always believed I would have children but it never happened. Like most women I thought one day I would find myself pregnant. That day never came and now I accept motherhood has passed me by. I can’t be sad about it because that would be selfish. So many incredible things have happened in my life that I am grateful for. I’m not going to adopt as I have a lot of children in my life. I am Aunty Stacia and Nanny Stacia to more than a dozen of my friends’ kids”.

There is a constant theme running through her life story and that is courage. When at 13 she was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease and had to learn to walk again after the subsequent operation caused her to be wheelchair bound, instead of it poisoning her young mind, she found the courage to get on with her life and became a professional dancer. She has this unique ability to bounce back from events regardless of their level of magnitude.

That innate courage is why she opted not to make a fuss of the fact that “motherhood passed her by”. Instead, she chose to embrace it and focus her energy on all the other positive things going on in her life. She is a woman after my own heart. She understands the preciousness of life and how it’s too unpredictable to be wasted on things that do not bring us peace.
