I wish everyone would respect Kim Cattrall’s decision not to take part in “Sex and the City 3”

By Nina Steele

Kim CattrallI watched both Sex and the City movies and frankly, I cannot remember the plot for either one. Even though both movies did well at the box office, the second one was universally panned. No wonder Kim Cattrall has turned down taking part in a third instalment. Why risk her reputation further when she does not need the money?

It makes for good headlines to portray a celebrity as a diva. And that is exactly what Kim Cattrall has been called recently for turning her back on the franchise. Even better, the fact that there seem to be bad blood between her and Sarah Jessica Parker has given the story even more publicity than I suspect it would have had.

Predictably, comments on some news media platforms have been divided. Fans of Sarah Jessica Parker have been heavily critical of Kim Cattrall for what they see as her scuppering any chance of the film ever being made, while Kim’s fans are putting the blame squarely on Sarah Jessica Parker. Now, if Kim Cattrall’s version of events is to be believed, the whole story has been concocted to make her look bad.

According to her, she made it clear to producers a year ago that she would not be taking part. She said this of the whole saga: “I never asked for any money, I never asked for any projects, to be thought of as some kind of diva is absolutely ridiculous.” She went on to say: “This isn’t about more money, this is not about more scenes, it’s not about any of those things. This is about a clear decision, an empowered decision in my life to end one chapter and start another. I’m 61. It’s now.” Of the likelihood of her ever playing Samantha Jones again, she said: “Me playing her, that I can assure you will never happen. For me it’s over, it’s over with no regrets.” And she went on to say: “I’m at a point in my life where I am making decisions that make me happy and going backwards in life doesn’t make me happy. Going forward that’s how I feel, I’m on the front foot not my backfoot.”

Regardless of whether you believe her version of events or not, I do object to strong women in the public eye being labelled divas, whenever they try to assert themselves. If at 61 Kim Cattrall no longer wishes to play a vamp, why try to force her hand? She is a wealthy woman and can afford to be more selective about the type of work she wants to be involved with. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Sex and the City has had its days. Unlike the movies, The TV series were brilliant and have earned their place as classics that most fans never tire to watch. The same cannot be said of the movies.
