Royal wedding fever has come and gone and life as usual goes on

By Nina Steele

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on their wedding dayAt the height of what came to be known as the ‘Markle debacle’, when some of Meghan’s family members seemed intent on causing as much damage and embarrassment as possible, I remember reading a comment online that made me pause from the whole madness. The comment simply read: “That too shall pass”. At that moment, I stopped worrying about the damage her side of the family was doing to Meghan Markle and knew that as usual, all would be forgotten once the couple became husband and wife, and life would go on as it always does. Because, as we all know, no tabloid story lasts forever. Everything being in a constant state of flux, what seems hurtful and damaging one minute, is forgotten the next.

For Meghan Markle (now the Duchess of Sussex), that turnaround came when Prince Charles agreed to give her away. Suddenly, the narrative was changed from her family to the wedding itself. Prince Charles was trending on twitter and the excitement about the whole wedding was back on.

Make no mistake, the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle was no ordinary event and of course that’s due to who Meghan Markle is. That she is half black with a poor family background, has ruffled quite a few feathers. But of course whether these people like it or not, love conquers everything. As a couple, they are obviously madly in love and I for one believe that they are in it for the long haul. Yes my prediction is that these two will go all the way.

As for the wedding itself, what a delight it was to watch. Meghan, as a savvy, beautiful and modern woman, who has lived a little, was always going to rise to the occasion. And boy, did she do just that. That dress! Loved it. And even the British weather, known for being highly unpredictable, delivered a beautifully sunny day with very low winds, which for a bride, is the perfect combination.

I cried a few times during the ceremony. As a black woman, the significance of the wedding was never lost on me. To see her mother, a descendant of slaves, and of course Meghan herself, rise to the highest echelon of British society, was too much at times. Meghan’s journey from a nobody to a princess is simply remarkable. It is a combination of self-belief, drive and ambition of a kind most people would not dare even contemplate. Whatever reservations some people may have about Meghan Markle, one thing is certain, calling her a role model for women everywhere is appropriate. Particularly women who happen to be poor with a background as messy as hers is.
