When you hire an apartment for 2 and get upgraded to one for a family of 4

We returned from a week long hiking holiday to Cortina in Italy just under 3 weeks ago. As we often do for this type of holiday, we hired an apartment. To our surprise, instead of the usual cosy and small apartment for 2 that we have become accustomed to, we opened the door to find a sprawling flat that is normally rented out to families with children. When my husband first opened the door, my reaction on seeing the long corridor was to try and guess which one of the many doors was the door to our apartment, not realising that we had the whole place for ourselves.

At first, I wasn’t sure what to make of it. I was of course very grateful to have all that space to ourselves, however, I was overwhelmed by the sheer size of the place. It took me a couple of hours to start appreciating it for what it was and then I could not stop marvelling at it!

The spare bedroom, which was meant for children, had a bunk bed with endless storage spaces. It also had en-suite bathroom. I only found out about the second bathroom the next day, so busy was I with getting accustomed with the rest of the place. That we got the apartment at a discount made the whole experience even more enjoyable. For anyone interested, the apartment was booked through booking.com. That’s the site we use for most of our holiday accommodations.

The sheer size of the place meant that we were spoilt for choice as to which room to use as our primary room. The kitchen, obviously designed with a family with children in mind, was big with a table and chairs, while the sitting room was by far the biggest we’ve ever had on holiday to date. In the end, we chose the sitting room as our main place to hang out. That it offered a better view of the mountains and surrounding area tipped the balance in its favour. As far as the holiday itself is concerned, it went well. We managed to go hiking most days, even though it rained most of the time we were there.

On the last day, as our flight back to the UK was in the evening, we decided to spend the day in Venice. Venice city centre is about 20 minutes away by car, from Venice Marco Polo airport. It was our first time in the city, even though we have been to Italy many times. We travelled by taxi (it cost 40 Euros one way) and in spite of the fact that it was raining heavily when we got there (thankfully the rain didn’t last long), we had a good time overall. We spent the time walking around, soaking up the atmosphere including the beautiful buildings and narrow passages that give the city its unique appeal. It was definitely worth the stopover.
