Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is asking whether having children in the face of climate change is still ok

By Nina Steele

Love her or loathe her, the one thing anyone interested in the political views of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez would agree on, is that she is not your ordinary politician. One of the reasons why so many of us are disillusioned with politics, is the fact that politicians have showed us time and time again that they cannot be trusted. They treat the electorate as if we were children. Telling us barefaced lies, and hoping that we are too stupid to see right through them. That’s why I now rarely watch political discussion shows. All you often end up with, is politicians spouting party lines. Absolutely depressing stuff.

That disillusionment with the old political class, is behind the meteoric rise of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She is a complete breath of fresh air. She tells it like it is and is not afraid to talk about issues most politicians are too afraid to touch. And population growth is one of those issues. I cannot recollect a politician anywhere even trying to point to the correlation between population growth and climate change. They are too afraid of the backlash from various bodies that have a vested interest in population numbers continuing to rise. It’s the elephant in the room that decision makers are pretending they cannot see.

In a recent Q&A session with her followers, Ocasio-Cortez said the following about the implications of climate change on future generations: “There is scientific consensus that the lives of children are gonna be very difficult. And it does lead young people to have a legitimate question: is it ok to still have children?”. She goes on to argue that it is a “basic moral question”.

I of course salute her for taking this issue on. She has clout, particularly with young people. And from my own experience of having this platform, I know that many are still on the fence regarding whether or not to have children. As Ocasio-Cortez also mentioned during her Q&A, money issues were already making many young people question whether they could realistically ever afford to become parents. Now they also have to take the urgency of climate change into consideration.

Like I said in my opening remarks, love her or loathe her, there is no denying the fact that she has lots of courage, and is nothing like many of the politicians we have become accustomed to. People everywhere are crying out for people like her. We need more politicians who are not afraid to tell it like it is.
