Tracey Emin is a very successful woman now looking for a life partner

By Nina Steele

Tracey EminTracey Emin’s views on motherhood have been known for some time. She does not want kids and it runs deep. Her mother never wanted her to have children. She said this in a past interview on the subject: “My mum never wanted me to have children. When I was young, she did everything she could to stop me. I went on the pill at 14. For her, having a child would have been failure of the highest level. She wanted me to have an education. She never wanted me to go through the pain of childbirth. Even when I was in my 30s, she was still telling me why I couldn’t ever have children.” Now aged 54 and a very successful international artist, she has set her eyes on finding a life partner.

In a recent interview in The Times, she said the following: “My real dream is that I might meet someone. It would be wonderful to be with someone and share my life. That sounds like such a simple thing. But I haven’t had it in years. And now I think it would be nice. Anyone, aged 35 to 65, male or female, any occupation – except perhaps an arms dealer. I am open to the world.” I do hope that she does find the right person eventually, although I suspect that it may not be that straight forward. Not because there aren’t many single people around of course, but simply because of who she is. When you are at that level, and with that kind of wealth, it’s important to be extremely careful about the people who you let into your life.

Sadly, the world she inhabits is full of cautionary tales when it comes to love stories. There will always be chancers who will not think twice about wanting half of her money, should she marry and then end up divorcing. Prenups are increasingly being contested, it seems they are not as watertight as is generally thought. Not only that, as it currently stands, they are not legally binding in the UK. For prenups to be upheld in the UK, they need to meet a set of criteria. The risk of losing a big chunk of the wealth that was created way before a relationship started, is one of the reasons why some have suggested that rich people such as her should avoid getting married all together.

Whatever the future holds for Tracey Emin in terms of her love life, I hope she can take some comfort in the fact that having money gives her the freedom to live her life her way. Of course you can have all the money in the world and still be completely miserable but not having any at all is in my view far worse.
