I will try to make this Christmas as simple and enjoyable as possible

By Nina Steele

Merry Christmas and Happy New YearWe are having a Christmas for two this year, and I have done my best to make it as simple and stress-free as possible. We are having turkey. I always make a point of buying a whole turkey, albeit a small one. Apart from the turkey, the gravy and vegetables, everything else was bought pre-cooked. I don’t know about you, but I have never been one to feel guilty about not making potatoes or cranberry sauce from scratch. Anything to make my life easy, considering how elaborate Christmas meals are.

In spite of everything else going on around us, I am glad that I still enjoy Christmas itself. It is easy to become cynical about the whole festive season, because of the focus on shopping. I may have written recently about my dislike at the conspicuous consumption aspect of the festive season, but come Christmas Eve, I am as excited as I was all those years ago.

I usually start cooking around 10am on Christmas day. I like making the meal on my own, it is much easier. The good think about cooking a Christmas meal today is that you can get help online, should you need it. This year, I needed to refresh my memory on gravy making as I rarely make it during the rest of the year.

I do my weekly shopping on Thursdays, and as Christmas falls on a Wednesday this year, everything I bought will be almost a week old on Christmas day. The turkey went straight in the freezer so that was never an issue. On the other hand, I had to reassess what to do about creams and the likes. I have a thing about doing one big shopping trip a week and nothing in between. And I try to apply that same rule for the festive season as well. Well, not this year. Luckily, we have a small Asda around the corner for last minute shopping.

In terms of entertainment, it will be either Netflix or Amazon. That’s if we are not too tired. Boxing Day, at least part of it, will most likely be spent walking in the countryside to burn all those calories, and then it will be back to eating some more. I am purposely cooking a meat-free dish on Boxing Day. I think we will both need a break from meat after eating so much of it.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
