Setting goals as a family without children

By Dann Alexander

For many couples, one of the main focuses is for them to build a family and be the best parents they can be. What then of families without children? Remember, if you fall into the latter category, you are still a family. Without children as part of the equation, you still probably have some focused life goals in mind. What could be the goals of families without children? We have come up with a few possibilities.

1. More personal time
Without children, you definitely might have more of that time to work on and spend on yourself. It might be health-related goals or the pursuit of something you are really passionate about. It might be a hobby, an art, or perhaps some sort of activism. There are probably many people without children who work in some sort of positive cause where they help children!

2. Achievement of Financial Freedom
If children are not in the picture, the expense that comes with raising them can be considered “disposable” income. Sure we all have bills to pay, but knowing that anything we make does not have to go towards raising children can only be a good thing! That money might go towards savings for some people and therefore bring them a few steps closer to some kind of financial freedom. This is an admirable focus that may be difficult to accomplish in this day and age for others. It certainly is possible for people to make that happen. Saving a little, can go a long way!

3. Job Success
Without children, it may be easier for some to work on achieving the kind of career they might want. A person without children can become married to their careers and still be married to their partners. Personally, I know many colleagues, extended relatives and friends without children, who are married to their jobs. They really are driven by their careers as their identity. The goal might be to balance out the marriages of job and home life to a successfully healthy degree.

If you do are a family without children, what would you consider your focus and goals to be? Have you achieved those goals? If not, how are you working on them?
