When the Universe conspires to make a relationship happen

By Nina Steele

I don’t know about you but I sometimes look back on my life and I shudder at the near misses and what might have been. Some events came so close to changing the course of my life that it has confirmed my belief in destiny.

I had a few failed relationships while living in the Ivory Coast and as a romantic at heart, I kept dreaming of the day when I would meet ‘The One’.

A couple of years before moving to the UK, I dated a medical student. He came across as a decent man, who was very keen to settle down. A few months into the relationship, I discovered that he was seeing another student. We all lived on the same campus, which made the whole set up quite difficult, as I would bump into the other woman on occasions. He eventually chose her over me, and as far as I was concerned that was the end of it.

I moved on with my life and a while later, I started a new relationship. One evening, as I was busy making myself dinner, I got a knock on the door. Standing outside my room, were my ex and his best friend. As it turned out, the other woman was two timing him with another man. And she eventually dumped him. He came to ask for my forgiveness and wanted me to take him back. His plan was for us to live together and marry soon after.

He had the shock of his life on hearing that I was in a new relationship. He obviously hoped that I would still be nursing a broken heart. The reunion was rather surreal to say the least. It felt a bit desperate on his part.

That he meant what he said about wanting to settle down was proven when he ended up marrying another student a couple of years later. I sometimes shudder at how close I came to becoming his wife. That would have meant that I would never have moved to the UK, nor met my husband!

When I moved to the UK, I had another two near misses. For whatever reasons, the relationships never developed into something deeper, even though both men were marriage material.

Now looking back, I can see that the Universe made sure that no one got in the way of my destiny. The time wasn’t quite right for me to meet the man who was destined for me.

And then when that time finally came, everything suddenly made sense. I met my husband and we were married within 6 months. He is everything I hoped for in a man and more. That we came out stronger after dealing with an issue as potentially destructive as infertility, has confirmed to me that we were meant to be together.
