Some of the challenges of being childless

By Nina Steele

Being childless is without doubt liberating. We as a couple now feel relieved that we are not going to have to deal with the type of pressures that today’s parents are under, in addition to the every day pressures of life. Fate has handed us a gift and that gift is to live a different kind of life than the majority of society. Having said that, one of the challenges of being childless I find, is deciding what happens to everything we own once we die. Naturally, not having children make you think of these issues more because of the obvious fact that people with children just have to divide their assets between their children and maybe a few institutions of their choosing.

As a childless by circumstance couple, we had to rethink many things including deciding who our beneficiaries should be, what proportion each should get etc. I suspect that having to deal with all these intricacies is what leads some people to leave everything to charity. Legacies are the bedrock of most charities, as a source of long term funding. No matter how daunting these issues appear to be, there is no escaping them when you are childless unless of course you choose to do nothing in which case the state will have to handle the distribution of your assets once you die. If you find this prospect even more unappealing then you have to take matters into your own hands while you are still alive.

  1. It is a difficult issue to deal with for sure. But I do agree with you that it has to be done. The thought of leaving it to the state does not appeal to me at all.
