DB’s Story: Another unsuccessful IVF treatment was the last straw for us

We were married for 7 years when we decided to try for a child. Like many other couples, we assumed that conceiving would be straight forward, however, it turned out to be anything but. Indeed, nothing prepared us for what was to follow, namely two years of trying to conceive during which I endured countless procedures including IVF. As anyone who has been through this journey will testify, the whole process is full of emotional stress, without mentioning the financial costs as well.

An unsuccessful IVF treatment 13 years ago, was in effect the last straw that broke the camel’s back. How much more could we endure as a couple?  Soon afterwards, we made the decision not to pursue further treatment and so we have remained childfree since. Fortunately, my husband has been very supportive throughout, and so we have dealt with the whole situation as a team and our marriage remains strong to this day.

My advice to anyone trying to come to terms with not having children is to seek help if needed and not feel as though you have to deal with the situation on your own, unless of course you are able to deal with it on your own. You also have to focus on the positive things in your life as opposed to focusing entirely on the fact that you are unable to have children. By focusing on the positives, you will eventually get through it.

  1. Hi DB, thanks for sharing your story and for inspiring anyone still struggling to come to terms with not being able to have children. This is what this community is all about, to inspire and empower anyone who is childless so that they enjoy their life more and above all, to do away with the negative connotation that is often attached to childlessness. As the many articles and opinions on this platform show, there is so much to life that no one should be under the impression that having children is the key to happiness, far from it.

  2. Sounds similar to our story. Agree totally with your conclusion.
